Getting your real estate license is the first step toward a career in the business, and the process is more straightforward than many people expect — though the exact requirements vary by state. Here’s the general path, with a note on Texas since that’s home for us.
First, you complete required pre-licensing education through an approved real estate school. These courses can be taken in person or online and cover the fundamentals of real estate principles, contracts, law, and practice. In Texas, this involves a set number of qualifying course hours mandated by the Texas Real Estate Commission (TREC). After finishing the coursework, you apply for a license and become eligible to sit for the state licensing exam.
Next, you pass the state exam, which tests both national real estate concepts and state-specific rules. Once you pass, you must affiliate with a sponsoring broker, since new agents can’t operate independently — you’ll hang your license with a brokerage or team that provides oversight, training, and support. There are also background check and application fees along the way.
Choosing where to take your courses matters, but choosing the right brokerage or team to start with matters even more. The right environment provides mentorship, leads, and systems that determine whether you thrive.
The Audra O’Neal Team helps new agents in the Houston area launch strong once they’re licensed, and we’re happy to point you toward reputable education options. If you’re thinking about getting licensed, reach out and let’s talk about your next steps.
