A real estate broker is a licensed professional who has taken additional education and passed a higher-level exam beyond what’s required to be an agent — and with that comes greater responsibility. Understanding the difference between agents and brokers helps clarify how the industry actually works.
Agents must work under the supervision of a broker; they can’t operate independently. Brokers, by contrast, can work on their own and, importantly, can hire and oversee agents. A broker is legally responsible for the transactions that their agents handle, ensuring everything is done correctly, ethically, and in compliance with the law. In that sense, brokers are the backbone of accountability in a real estate office.
Brokers generally fall into a few roles. A “designated” or “managing” broker runs a brokerage and supervises its agents. An “associate” broker holds a broker’s license but chooses to work under another broker. Some brokers open their own firms, building and leading teams of agents while earning a share of the commissions those agents produce.
Day to day, brokers may still help clients buy and sell, but they also mentor agents, ensure legal compliance, resolve issues, and set the standards and culture of their office. Their experience and oversight protect both agents and the clients they serve.
Whether you’re working with an agent or a broker, what matters most is expertise and trust. The Audra O’Neal Team brings both to every client across the Houston area. If you’re buying, selling, or building a career, reach out to us.
