Houston Ranks No. 2 in the Nation for New Home Construction in 2026

The Houston housing market continues to dominate national real estate headlines.

According to a new report from ConsumerAffairs, Houston now ranks as the No. 2 market in the United States for new home construction activity in 2026.

The report highlights just how rapidly Houston and the surrounding metro area continue to grow — especially as demand for housing remains strong across Texas.

Houston’s Construction Boom by the Numbers

ConsumerAffairs analyzed data from the U.S. Census Bureau and Zillow across 150 of the nation’s largest metro areas.

The rankings were based on:

🏗️ New residential building permits issued
🏡 New construction homes sold

And Houston posted some massive numbers during just the first two months of 2026:

✔️ 9,239 new residential building permits issued
✔️ 3,535 newly built homes sold

In fact, Houston led the nation in total new construction home sales during that time period.

Only Dallas and New York City issued more residential permits.

The Greater Houston Area Continues To Expand

The growth goes far beyond Houston city limits.

The broader Houston–Pasadena–The Woodlands metropolitan area also ranked No. 2 nationally for total new residential development activity.

According to the report, nearly 66,000 new residential units — including single-family homes, apartments, and condos — were authorized across the metro area in 2024 alone.

That kind of growth reflects the continued demand for housing driven by:

📈 Population growth
💼 Job opportunities
🏢 Business expansion
🌟 Relatively affordable living compared to other major metros

Texas Continues To Lead the Nation

Texas dominated the rankings overall, with four cities landing in the national top 10 for new home construction:

1️⃣ Dallas
2️⃣ Houston
7️⃣ Austin
🔟 San Antonio

Dallas narrowly overtook Houston for the top position after issuing more than 11,000 residential permits during the first two months of 2026.

But Houston still outperformed Dallas in one major category: the total number of new homes actually sold.

Why Houston’s Housing Market Keeps Growing

Houston’s continued construction boom highlights one important reality: people are still moving to Texas — and especially to the Houston area.

The region continues attracting buyers because of its:

✔️ Strong job market
✔️ Diverse economy
✔️ Relative affordability
✔️ Expanding suburban communities
✔️ New master-planned developments
✔️ Access to major industries like healthcare, energy, and technology

Communities throughout Sugar Land, Katy, Richmond, Fulshear, Cypress, and The Woodlands continue seeing significant residential growth as buyers search for more space, newer homes, and lifestyle-focused neighborhoods.

What This Means for Buyers and Sellers

For buyers, more construction means:

🏡 More inventory
💡 More options
🔑 Opportunities for builder incentives and rate buy-downs

For sellers, strong development activity signals continued long-term confidence in the Houston market.

While increased inventory may create more competition in some areas, Houston’s population growth and housing demand continue supporting overall market stability.

And in many suburban communities, new construction is helping fuel additional retail, restaurants, schools, and infrastructure improvements — making these areas even more attractive for future homeowners.

Bottom Line

Houston’s ranking as the No. 2 market for new home construction confirms what many local residents already know: this region continues to grow at an incredible pace.

With thousands of new homes being built and sold, Houston remains one of the strongest and most active housing markets in the country heading into the second half of 2026.
